In honor of Flag Day, June 14th, at the invitation of The Village retirement community, the Gainesville Composite Squadron led a retirement ceremony for old,
worn, and damaged U.S. flags. Following speeches
from C/CMSgt Brent Rist and Capt
Leslie Ballard about the meaning of
leadership and the history of CAP, the ceremony began. The Color Guard marched
out with the ceremonial flag. The Color Guard, made up of C/CMSgt Brent Rist, C/SSgt Tim Lhota,
C/SrA Tiffany Jakowczuk and C/CMSgt Evan Stanley, took position around the burn barrel. 1st
Lt Collin David presented a short speech on the symbolism of the U.S. flag. The flag bearers then unfolded the flag and solemnly placed it into
the fire. The Color Guard then stood vigilant, guarding the burn barrel until
all remnants of the flag had burned away. It made for an enjoyable and
unforgettable experience.
